The Animal Nutrition teams from the CMI took part in the IBBK biogas, International Biogas and Bioenergy Center, at Schwabisch Hall, Germany on 16th and 17th October. This event brought together 170 people and 20 nationalities, around the topic of biogas as well as litter processing and digestate.
IBBK is an independent body specialised in bioenergy. Its existence for 20 years on topics such as biogas makes it a serious partner that has already supported around forty projects.
Because of this issue, Guillaume Salomé, R&D engineer in Animal Nutrition and Frédéric Gob, head of Biogas development, made the journey in order to be close to the breakthroughs made on the subject. This congress was also the opportunity to present the CMI’s breakthroughs surrounding digestate processing with a presentation and a poster.
It is the first ever presentation given by the Animal Nutrition R&D around this issue so that the CMI Roullier can be recognised as a key player in the sector, but also to accompany the launch of a range of products dedicated to this production that we have been working on since the spring 2018 with a dedicated team. The presence of a high number of players at this event was a driving force for the implementation of partnerships thanks to successful networking. Two biogas facilities, at the cutting-edge of new processing and production techniques, were also visited after the congress.
Biogas, also called methanisation, uses organic waste, livestock manure or silage to produce natural gas which will be injected either in the gas network or used to feed a cogenerator in order to produce electricity and heat. This circular economy uses residues of organic matter in order to supply housing with energy in the form of gas, electricity and heat.
Northern Europe has always been innovative surrounding environmental issues with Germany which is one of the cradles of biogas. Today it is the most advanced countries in the world in this energy production because it has almost 10,000 methanisors.
